Your breast health is very important. When detected early, breast cancer has a very high survival rate.
Follow these two simple steps one week after your period ends, or at the same time each month if you do not have periods, to check for any changes in the look or feel of your breast.
Step 1: In the shower or lying down
Raise one arm and place it behind your head. With the opposite hand check your breast using the pads of your 3 middle fingers. Beginning in the underarm area, make small circular motions moving across the breast in an up and down pattern. Repeat on the other side.
Step 2: In front of a mirror
Lift both arms above your head and look for any changes in the size or shape of your breasts. Notice any dimpling, puckering or redness. Repeat with your arms at your sides and bending forward with your hands on your hips. Check for any discharge by gently squeezing each nipple.
Report any changes to your doctor or nurse
Follow these simple guidelines for early breast cancer detection
- Schedule a screening mammogram every year beginning at age 40
- If you are in your 20’s and 30’s, have a clinical breast exam by your health professional at least every three years and once every year after age 40
- Perform a monthly breast self exam following the steps on the front of this card beginning at age 20
